Ottawa, ON – Rachael Thomas, Conservative Shadow Minister for Canadian Heritage, intends to bring forward a motion calling for Minister of Heritage, Pablo Rodriguez, to appear before committee to answer questions concerning the $133,822 paid by his department to Laith Marouf, who is a public racist, bigot, and anti-Semite. The Minister remained silent on this issue for more than a month after his department was made aware of the issue.

“It is unfathomable that the Heritage Minister had no idea his department was in damage control for over a month after concerns were raised about Heritage Canada having hired the public racist, bigot, and anti-Semite, Laith Marouf, to teach Canadians about anti-racism.

“To our Committee members’ disbelief, Minister Rodriguez testified during a meeting on Bill C-18 that he learned about his department hiring Marouf when he read it in the news on August 22nd, over a month after his department was made aware. Additionally, he didn’t bother to make a public statement condemning Marouf until August 31st.

“Interestingly, the NDP and the Bloc Québécois both had questions for the Minister on this matter, despite having voted down a previous Conservative motion that called for Minister Rodriguez to appear before the Committee to answer questions regarding the funding granted to Marouf. Seeing there is a desire from the NDP and the Bloc Québécois to question the Minister on this important issue, we are hopeful all opposition parties can work together to request the Minister to come to testify at Committee.

“Tomorrow, we intend to give all members of the Canadian Heritage Committee the opportunity to call for transparency and join us in holding the government to account. We intend to move a motion calling for Minister Rodriguez to appear before the Committee and answer our many questions regarding his department’s hiring of Laith Marouf. Though the meeting is scheduled to be in-camera, we intend to ask the Committee members that we discuss this motion in public.

“Canadians deserve answers, we call on members of the NDP, the Bloc Québécois, and the Liberal Party to stand with Canadians and support this Conservative motion tomorrow.”

Ottawa (Ontario) – Rachael Thomas, ministre du Cabinet fantôme conservateur responsable du Patrimoine canadien, a l’intention de présenter une motion demandant au ministre du Patrimoine, Pablo Rodriguez, de comparaître devant le Comité pour répondre aux questions concernant les 133 822 $ versés par son ministère à Laith Marouf, qui est ouvertement raciste et antisémite. Le ministre est resté silencieux sur cette question pendant plus d’un mois après que son ministère ait été mis au courant de la situation.

« Il est inconcevable que le ministre du Patrimoine n’ait pas su que son ministère ait tenté de limiter les dégâts pendant plus d’un mois après que des inquiétudes aient été soulevées concernant le fait que Patrimoine Canada avait embauché Laith Marouf, une personne ouvertement raciste et antisémite, pour sensibiliser les Canadiens à la lutte contre le racisme.

« À l’incrédulité des membres du comité, le ministre Rodriguez a déclaré lors d’une réunion sur le projet de loi C-18 qu’il a appris que son ministère avait embauché Marouf après l’avoir lu dans les journaux le 22 août, plus d’un mois après que son ministère en ait été informé. De plus, il n’a pas pris la peine de faire une déclaration publique condamnant Marouf avant le 31 août.

« Il est intéressant de noter que le NPD et le Bloc Québécois avaient tous deux des questions à poser au ministre à ce sujet, bien qu’ils aient voté contre une motion conservatrice antérieure qui demandait au ministre Rodriguez de se présenter devant le Comité pour répondre aux questions concernant le financement accordé à Marouf. Voyant que le NPD et le Bloc Québécois souhaitent interroger le ministre sur cette question importante, nous espérons que tous les partis d’opposition pourront travailler ensemble pour demander au ministre de venir témoigner devant le Comité.

« Demain, nous avons l’intention de donner à tous les membres du Comité du patrimoine canadien l’occasion de réclamer la transparence et de se joindre à nous pour demander des comptes au gouvernement. Nous avons l’intention de présenter une motion demandant au ministre Rodriguez de se présenter devant le Comité et de répondre à nos nombreuses questions concernant l’embauche de Laith Marouf par son ministère. Bien que la réunion soit prévue à huis clos, nous avons l’intention de demander aux membres du Comité que nous discutions de cette motion en public.

« Les Canadiens méritent des réponses. Nous demandons aux députés du NPD, du Bloc Québécois et du Parti libéral de soutenir les Canadiens et d’appuyer cette motion conservatrice, demain. »
