Ottawa, ON – Lianne Rood, Conservative Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Agri-Food, and Luc Berthold, Conservative Shadow Minister for the Treasury Board, released the following statement congratulating Canadian beef producers and processors on their recognition from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE):
“We want to congratulate Canadian beef producers and processors on the recognition from the World Organisation for Animal Health that Canadian beef is at ‘negligible risk’ for Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy. They worked hard to achieve this designation.
“While this is great news for the industry, more action needs to be taken. The Minister of Agriculture’s job is not done with this ruling. Now is the time to review the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s burdensome regulations around specific risk materials to level the playing fields between Canadian producers and processors and their competitors.
“The OIE recognition is important for shipments abroad, but especially for shipments to the United States whose beef received this recognition in 2013.
“As a result of this rating, Canadian beef can expand into markets in Asia, Europe, and the United States, and will increase what can be shipped from each head of livestock ready for market.
“While we are pleased with this recognition for Canadian beef producers and processors, it is long overdue. There is still much more work to be done to level the playing field. Canada’s Conservatives will continue working to secure the future of the Canadian beef industry."

Ottawa (Ontario) – Luc Berthold, ministre du Cabinet fantôme responsable du Conseil du trésor, et Lianne Rood, ministre du Cabinet fantôme conservateur responsable de l’Agriculture et de l’Agroalimentaire, ont fait la déclaration suivante, félicitant les producteurs et les transformateurs de bœuf
canadiens pour leur reconnaissance par l’Organisation mondiale de la santé animale (OIE) :
« Nous voulons féliciter les producteurs et les transformateurs de bœuf canadiens pour leur reconnaissance par l’Organisation mondiale de la santé animale, selon laquelle le bœuf canadien pose un ‘risque négligeable’ d’encéphalopathie spongiforme bovine. Ils ont travaillé fort pour obtenir cette désignation.
« C’est une bonne nouvelle pour l’industrie, mais il faut faire plus. Le travail de la ministre de l’Agriculture n’est pas terminé avec cette décision. Il faut maintenant revoir le fardeau de la réglementation de l’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments sur les matières à risque spécifiées pour offrir des conditions égales aux producteurs et aux transformateurs canadiens et à leurs concurrents.
« La reconnaissance par l’OIE est importante pour les expéditions à l’étranger, en particulier aux États-Unis, dont le bœuf a reçu cette reconnaissance en 2013.
« Grâce à cette désignation, le bœuf canadien peut maintenant être exporté en Asie, en Europe et aux États-Unis, et cela va augmenter ce qui peut être expédié de chaque tête de bétail prête pour le marché.
« Nous sommes contents de cette reconnaissance pour les producteurs et les transformateurs canadiens, mais elle était attendue depuis longtemps. Il reste beaucoup à faire pour offrir des conditions égales. Les conservateurs du Canada vont continuer de travailler pour protéger l’avenir de l’industrie canadienne du bœuf. »
