Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Michael Chong, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Bezan, Deputy Opposition Whip, and Melissa Lantsman, Conservative Shadow Minister for Transport, today released the following statement on the government’s failure to take serious action against the Iranian regime for the downing of Flight PS752:
“The Liberal government has steadfastly refused to assign full responsibility to the Iranian regime for its act of terrorism in the downing of Flight PS752. The Trudeau Liberals have also failed to take any meaningful action at the international level to demonstrate Canada’s horror and disgust at the missile strikes two years ago today which killed 138 individuals with ties to Canada.
“An Ontario court has found Iran guilty of this act of terrorism and awarded damages to the victims of $107 million. Those responsible for this attack must be held to account and the Liberal government has a responsibility to assist the victims’ families in seeking justice.
“Conservatives have called for Magnitsky sanctions to be imposed on those responsible in the Iranian regime if they failed to cooperate with the investigation. Iran’s refusal to negotiate compensation for the victims makes it clear the Liberal government must use every tool available domestically and internationally.
“Conservatives also call on the Liberal government to begin discussions with the International Civil Aviation Organization to limit Iran’s ability to operate commercial aircraft in international airspace until they agree to abide by international norms in the investigation into the downing of PS752 and negotiate reparations to the families of the victims.”

Ottawa (Ontario) – L’honorable Michael Chong, ministre du Cabinet fantôme conservateur responsable des Affaires étrangères, James Bezan, whip adjoint de l’Opposition officielle, et Melissa Lantsman, ministre du Cabinet fantôme conservateur responsable des Transports, ont fait la déclaration suivante sur l’incapacité du gouvernement à poser des gestes concrets contre le régime iranien à la suite de l’écrasement du vol PS752 :
« Le gouvernement libéral a fermement refusé d’attribuer l’entière responsabilité au régime iranien pour son acte de terrorisme dans l’écrasement du vol PS752. Les libéraux de Trudeau n’ont pas non plus posé des gestes concrets au plan international pour montrer l’horreur et le dégoût du Canada à l’égard des frappes de missiles qui ont tué 138 personnes ayant des liens avec le Canada, il y a maintenant deux ans.
« Un tribunal ontarien a déclaré l’Iran coupable de cet acte de terrorisme et a accordé des dommages et intérêts de 107 millions de dollars aux victimes. Les responsables de cette attaque doivent être tenus responsables et le gouvernement libéral a la responsabilité d’aider les familles des victimes à obtenir justice.
« Les conservateurs ont demandé que des sanctions Magnitsky soient imposées aux responsables du régime iranien s’ils ne coopèrent pas à l’enquête. Le refus de l’Iran de négocier une compensation pour les victimes montre clairement que le gouvernement libéral doit utiliser tous les outils à sa disposition aux plans national et international.
« Les conservateurs demandent également au gouvernement libéral d’entamer des discussions avec l’Organisation de l’aviation civile internationale afin de limiter la capacité de l’Iran à exploiter des avions commerciaux dans l’espace aérien international jusqu’à ce qu’il accepte de respecter les normes internationales dans l’enquête sur l’écrasement du vol PS752 et de négocier des réparations aux familles des victimes. »
