Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Candice Bergen, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Shavuot:

“After being delivered from oppression through the Exodus, the people of Israel gathered at Mount Sinai where God gave them His divine law – the Torah.

“This pivotal moment in Jewish history is still commemorated today in the festival of Shavuot. Starting tonight, Jews around the world will celebrate the gift of the Torah, while studying and meditating on the wisdom it holds.

“Shavuot is also an occasion to celebrate the other gifts that God has blessed us with over the past year. This festival has always been associated with a season of harvest and the beginning of summer. It serves as a time of gratitude, as we give thanks to God for all He has provided.

“On behalf of the Conservative Party of Canada, I’d like to wish Jews in Canada and around the world a time of peace as they reflect on the Torah and participate in the rich traditions associated with Shavuot.

“Happy Shavuot. Chag Sameach!”

Ottawa (Ontario) – L’honorable Candice Bergen, cheffe du Parti conservateur du Canada et de l’Opposition officielle, a fait la déclaration suivante à l’occasion de la fête de Chavouot :

« Après avoir été délivré de l’oppression par l’Exode, le peuple d’Israël s’est rassemblé au mont Sinaï où Dieu lui a donné sa loi divine — la Torah.

« Ce moment charnière de l’histoire juive est encore commémoré aujourd’hui lors de la fête de Chavouot. Dès ce soir, les Juifs du monde entier célébreront le don de la Torah, tout en étudiant et en méditant sur la sagesse qu’elle renferme.

« Chavouot est également l’occasion de célébrer les autres cadeaux dont Dieu nous a gratifiés au cours de l’année écoulée. Cette fête a toujours été associée à une saison de récolte et au début de l’été. C’est un moment de gratitude, où nous remercions Dieu pour tout ce qu’il nous a offert.

« Au nom du Parti conservateur du Canada, j’aimerais souhaiter aux Juifs du Canada et du monde entier un temps de paix alors qu’ils réfléchissent à la Torah et participent aux riches traditions associées à la fête de Chavouot.
